BIOART VILLAGE

In 2016, BioArt Laboratories Foundation relocated from her 750 m2 lab in Strijp-T to a historical site unique to the city of Eindhoven: the Duitse Woningen, or German Houses, a bunker complex originally erected to accommodate German military officers. A new location with 1,5 hectares of space, situated in the forested area steps away from creative Strijp-S, where culture, nature and ecology go hand in hand. An invigorating, unpretentious location, rugged, dynamic, unpolished, paradoxical and lively. An atmosphere we actively share with our public through expositions, debates, workshops and other events.

The forested area our BioArt Village is located in represents one of the green lobes towards the Eindhoven city centre, truly functioning as one of Eindhoven’s green ‘lungs’. Urban life races onward around the area, but the site itself breaths tranquility. The biodiversity of the location and its surrounding land is enormous, located right in the middle of a forest and alongside lush fruit gardens. The Duitse Woningen offer a serene atmosphere in the periphery of industrial Strijp-S and the future Brainport Innovation Campus.

The complex consists of five freestanding reinforced buildings of differing sizes disguised as a traditional farmstead in so-called Heimatstil, located on a 1,5 hectare plot of mixed forest. The spatial set-up of the Duitse Woningen complex had to mask its actual military purpose back in the day. The rigid and strict geometry normally associated with bunkers has been consciously avoided. Seen from the sky, the structures gave off the impression to be a traditional Brabant farmstead in an informal arrangement.
